Japan Then and Now showcases the sights, sounds and tastes of the ancient and modern day capital cities of Japan, Kyoto and Tokyo. Drawing from the cuisines of Kyoto and Tokyo and new to the menu this year is the bento that has been created specifically for Folklorama patrons. Chef Ono’s popular niku-don (beef on rice), matsuri dogs, miso soup, and sushi are back. Sample from our selection of Japanese beer and sake or share a Mt Fuji sized kakigori (shaved ice) while enjoying one of our three nightly shows featuring traditional and modern performances by our fabulous local artists. Be sure to come early and catch our daily pre-show martial arts demonstrations before the main show begins! Pre-show demonstrations are at 6:25, 7:55, and 9:25, and a reminder that we are a cash only pavilion.

Once again the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba (JCAM) sponsored the Japanese Pavilion at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall on College Street this year from July 31 to August 6 which was the first week of the 2 week cultural festival. Dance, taiko, koto, foods both traditional and innovative (like Spam Musubi – a tasty snack that originated in either Okinawa or Hawaii). All indications are that it was another roaring success. A full report on this amazing volunteer effort will be sent to you in September.
Volunteer Appreciation Night is Thursday September 1 for all Folklorama workers as well as those who have volunteered in any capacity for JCAM over the past year. There will be food, games and a great party atmosphere starting at 6 p.m. Let the office know if you’re coming so we’ll have enough food on hand!
